and I keep searching...

Yesterday I spent the day searching online for jobs in cameroon. The absence of company websites is alarming. I have no clue why organisations have not realised that to compete effectively in the world now, they need to market themselves to everyone. True some businesses in cameroon are predominantly regional, and very rarely national, and may think they have no business creating a website. The truth is, you never know when or where your next business opportunity will present itself.

I discovered a young cameroonian IT company, AfroVision. Based in Buea, they specialise in the creating affordable websites, software applications, and also offer IT training. They've only been operating since 2006, and yet they have a really sophisticated website, and have an impressive portfolio. I was really impressed with the work they are doing. If only we had more of them around, then Cameroon will have nothing to envy its more advanced neighbours like Nigeria and Ghana.

Hi Dibo, I came here by way of the comment you left on my blog.

I'm glad to hear that you're pursuing a career in IT. For what it's worth, I've worked alongside many so-called "geek girls" in the industry who were capable of writing code at the same level (or better) than the guys. It's true that the alpha male type you describe exists, but thankfully they're in the minority.

Likewise, you point out that IT is still coming into its own in Cameroon. This is true as well, but I think you'll find that centers like Buea are making some great strides. One new business you mention, AfroVisioN, founded by Mambe Churchill Nanje is taking an early lead in the IT space here. I'd encourage you to contact Churchill, he's a great guy.

Well, lots to talk about. Drop me a note at billzimmerman [at] gmail [dot] com and we'll discuss.

cheers,
Bill

Hi Dibo,
I was on mambe's blog when I got to know about you.

Well, it's a real issue here in Cameroon. Companies are yet to embrace websites as business tools. The few sites that are available are seldom updated. However, folks are getting informed as the days go by.

Beside AfroVisioN created by my very good friend Churchill, there is also NjangiHost (http://njangihost.com) created feb 2008, now hosting more than 100 domains. With a staff strenth of 5 from Feb 2009, we hope to step to 7 (including account managers, developers, designers, etc) by March this year.

On Friday 16/01/2009, we sent three commercial agents to Akwa Douala with 15 survey forms. 1 out of every 5 business cameroonians does not know the difference between a website and an email address. ); I think we've got serious work.

Shalom!
